From the Lens: The Theatrical Ambiance of a Ramen Bowl

Recently, I had the pleasure of doing a test shoot featuring a bowl of ramen for a potential client. And let me tell you, it was a pure joy to capture the essence of this dish. The Prep

Now, any seasoned photographer knows that the secret sauce to a mouthwatering food photo isn’t just about the food itself—it’s about the whole shebang, the mise-en-scène, if you will. That means finding the perfect props and ingredients to create a scene that’s as visually appealing as it is delicious.

In the case of my ramen test shoot, I knew I needed to find a bowl that would do this iconic dish justice. Now, I’ve photographed everything from caviar to cupcakes, but I have to admit, I’d never owned a ramen bowl before. So, off I went on a little adventure to find the perfect vessel for my noodle-y masterpiece.

My first stop was H Mart, a Korean supermarket chain that’s a treasure trove of Asian ingredients and kitchenware. The aisles were a riot of colors and aromas, and I felt like a kid in a candy store as I browsed the endless rows of bowls. There were sleek ceramic bowls, rustic stoneware bowls, and even bowls adorned with cute little ramen-themed designs. After much deliberation (and a few impulse snack purchases), I finally settled on a beautiful black matte bowl that seemed to whisper, “Fill me with deliciousness.”

Setting the Stage for Ramen Stardom

But a ramen bowl is nothing without its contents, so my next mission was to source the freshest, most vibrant ingredients I could find. Luckily, I live in a city with fantastic farmer’s markets, where local growers bring their seasonal bounty every week. I strolled through the stalls, my senses tingling with the sights and smells of ripe tomatoes, fragrant herbs, and crisp cucumbers. I carefully selected a rainbow of vegetables—carrots, scallions, mushrooms, and broccoli—each one destined to play a starring role in my ramen tableau.

Back in my studio, I laid out my treasures like an artist preparing their palette. The black ramen bowl, the colorful vegetables, a few well-worn chopsticks—it was all coming together. I could already envision the steam rising from the bowl, the glistening broth, and the perfectly arranged noodles. I was ready to create a photo that would not only showcase the beauty of ramen but also transport the viewer to a world of warmth, comfort, and culinary delight.

Photoshoot Today

The day of the shoot arrived, and the energy in my home studio was electric. I’d transformed my usual workspace into a mini ramen haven, with the delicious aroma of broth simmering away in the background. My trusty camera gear was at the ready, and I was eager to capture the essence of this beloved dish.

For this shoot, I opted for a bold and dramatic approach. I wanted to create a look that was both hard and poppy, with deep shadows that would accentuate the vibrant colors of the ramen. To achieve this, I utilized my trusty strobes, positioning them strategically to cast dramatic shadows and highlight the textures of the noodles, vegetables, and broth.

I wanted the greens to really pop, so I focused my lighting on the scallions, broccoli florets, and other verdant elements, making them appear almost luminous against the dark background. The contrast between light and shadow was key to creating a sense of drama and intrigue.

To keep the focus squarely on the ramen itself, I decided to shoot close and tight, filling the frame with the bowl and its delicious contents. This allowed me to capture every intricate detail, from the glistening broth to the delicate wisps of steam rising from the surface.

As I peered through the viewfinder, I could almost taste the rich umami flavors, the subtle spice, and the comforting warmth of the broth. It was as if the ramen was coming to life before my very eyes, and my camera was there to capture every moment of its deliciousness.
