When you think of Austin, Texas, you may picture live music, barbecue, and unique food trucks. But now, a bit of Spain is about to make its mark on the city’s vibrant food scene. Chocolatería San Ginés, a legendary café from Madrid, is opening a brick-and-mortar location in Austin, and for those of us who know it well, this is big news!
During a trip to Madrid in 2019, I had the chance to visit San Ginés with my husband. He had studied abroad in Spain years before and always talked about the café’s churros and chocolate. He knew I would love it, and after just one visit, I was hooked. In fact, we went back three times during our stay! Now that San Ginés is coming to Austin, I’m beyond excited, not just for myself but for the entire creative community here.
Photographing food isn’t just about making it look good—it’s about telling a story. San Ginés isn’t just a place; it’s a feeling – warm, inviting, and brimming with history and flavor. As a food photographer and lover of history, I find myself drawn to places like this. To truly capture its soul, you need a creative spark, a delicate touch with lighting, and an unwavering attention to every little detail. You don’t just point and shoot; you immerse yourself in the atmosphere.
When you walk into San Ginés, the old-world charm is immediately apparent. The warm light bounces off the rich brown hues of the churros and the glossy sheen of the chocolate. It’s the kind of café where you can smell the cinnamon and coffee before you even see the counter. I always make sure to arrive early in the morning—just as the café is waking up, and the churros are fresh out of the fryer.
Of course, the star of the show at San Ginés is the churros. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, they’re the perfect vehicle for the café’s thick, velvety chocolate sauce. One tiny bite, and you’re instantly hooked. Yes. It happens that fast. The café also served coffee, pastries, Spanish sweets, creamy custards, and of course, more chocolate. Every sip and every bite feels indulgent but in the best way.
There’s something special about Chocolatería San Ginés. Maybe it’s the history, maybe it’s the food, or maybe it’s the feeling you get when you walk through the door. Whatever it is, it’s a place that leaves an impression. As someone who’s experienced the magic of San Ginés firsthand, I can say that Austin is in for a treat.
